Iranian mullahs meddling in Iraqi draft constitution raise concern

ImageNCRI, September 29 – The Iraqi constitution and Iranian regime’s interference in formulation of its draft has alarmed Iraqi’s. Their main concern has been the introduction of items based on Islamic fundamentalism and they do not want to follow the Iranian example, the most repressive system in modern history.

To this end many Iraqi political parties, organizations, tribal sheikhs councils and political and social personalities have joined a wave of international calls by lawyers, jurists, political and human rights activists to raise their concern on this matter with national and international bodies particularly on an item affecting refugees and political asylum seekers in Iraq.

In a recent move they had written to United Nations authorities, religious personalities and government officials in Iraq, urging them to revise or remove the third clause of the Article 21 in the Iraqi draft constitution that is going to be put on referendum in October.

The secretary general of the Iraqi social democratic party, Dr. Fazel Al-Hajjam; the head of non-governmental organizations of Salaheddin, Mr. Sohail Sameraie; the Vice President of the Arabs and Kurds Solidarity Association, Dr. Mashhadani, and a number of Iraqi Sheiks and tribal leaders are among those who have joined the growing move.

The Iraqi media have also felt the threat by Iranian regime’s interferences in their country’s affairs.

Commenting on the third clause of Article 21 of the draft constitution, the Iraqi weekly As-Shahed Al-Mostaqel, in its latest issue wrote: “This Article has definitely been written in the Iranian religious city of Qom (home to main theological schools in Iran), with the goal of pressuring the People’s Mojahedin of Iran.”

The article, entitled “Where has this draft constitution been written?” addresses the Iranian regime’s interference in drafting the Iraqi constitution.
