Iran: Dutch MPs express grave concern over rights abuses

Iran: Dutch MPs express grave concern over rights abusesNCRI – Human rights violations in Iran was discussed in a meeting of Dutch parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on February 23. MPs from different political parties expressed their concern over the deteriorating state of human rights in Iran and called on the Dutch Foreign Minister to lead an initiative in the European Union on this issue.

Mr. Hank Ormel, Foreign Affairs spokesman of the Christian Democratic Party which is part of the coalition government told the Foreign Minister, Bernard Bot, that the MPs had repeatedly expressed their concern over Iran and that the human rights situation was deteriorating by days. He asked whether the government had done anything about Iran and in particular the suppression of Sufi religious minority in recent weeks and the high number of executions.

The Socialist Party spokesman on Foreign Affairs, Mr. Harry van Bommel, also expressed his concern over the human rights abuses in Iran as it is deteriorating. By referring to recent brutal suppression of transport workers in Tehran and the Sufis, Mr. Bommel regretted EU’s lack of action to deal with appalling human rights situation in Iran and called for government’s immediate move on this matter.

Responding to questions by the MPs, Mr. Bot also expressed his concern over recent cases of suppression of protest moves in Iran and increasing number of executions. He said the government had raised its concern over human rights violations and the arbitrary executions in Iran with Tehran’s clerical regime.
