dpa – A court in western Iran ordered the amputation of a thief's hand, local media reported Saturday.
A man convicted of robbery had his hand cut off in the city of Malayer, the daily Kayhan said without giving further details.
Hand amputation is a traditional Islamic punishment for thieves with several convictions, but it had not been implemented in Iran in recent years.
Police said last year that the practice could be reinstituted as a way to deter rising crime.
Implementing Islamic law in Iran – such as hand amputations, stoning for adultery and executing minors – has caused international criticism.
The judiciary in recent years has avoided using the Islamic punishments, but in some parts of the country, such verdicts are issued.
