UN investigating Iranian regime role in Yemen arms shipment

NCRI – UN sanctions experts are investigating the Yemeni government’s request to investigate Iranian regime’s role in  smuggling weapons to Yemen, diplomats said on Friday in United Nation, according to a report by Agence France Presse.

Yemen has applied formally to a committee of the UN Security Council to assist in investigating the arms shipment seized in the Yemeni territorial waters.

Yemen’s ambassador to the United Nations Jamal al-Sallal delivered a letter from the Yemeni government to Mr. Gary Francis Quinlan President of the Security Council Committee established under the Resolution 1737 on sanctions against Iranian regime.
Experts on sanctions against Iranian regime went to Yemen last week following the seizure of the ship on January 23.

In a letter to the Security Council obtained by AFP, Yemen’s Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi said the shipment included “SAM-2 and SAM-3 surface-to-air missiles that had been handed over in Iran to eight Yemeni sailors for transport to Yemen.”
