UK emphasized Iranian regime’s role in suppressing Syrian people and providing arms to Taliban

NCRI – The British government emphasized its position regarding Iranian regime’s role in suppressing Syrian people, Agence France Presse reported on Thursday.

According to the AFP, after the British charge d’affaires in Tehran was summoned to the Foreign Ministry, Britain said it “stands by its statement” regarding the Iranian regime’s assistance to Syria in brutal suppression of protests.

British Foreign Office said that the British charge d’affaires “was asked to explain recent UK statements on Iran, including on Iran’s role supporting the Syrian regime in crushing protests.”

AFP quoted Foreign Office spokesperson as saying: “We remain extremely concerned by the Iranian government’s repression of its own people and its support for violent elements in the region. We have seen credible information suggesting Iran is helping Syria with the suppression of protests there, including through the provision of expertise and equipment. The spokesperson also said that the issue had already been discussed with the Iranian regime’s charge d’affaires in London.

The Foreign Office official added: “We also note that Iran has provided no response to clear evidence of its provision of arms to the Taliban; a matter we have referred to the U.N. for investigation.”
