Senior regime official says popular protests aimed to bring down regime

NCRI – The Iranian regime’s Friday Prayer leader in Tehran has said that the objective of the 2009 mass uprisings in Iran was to overthrow the clerical regime as was shown by the slogan “down with the principle of velayat-e faqih [absolute clerical rule].”

Mullah Ahmad Khatami said during the regime’s Friday Prayer sermon in Tehran that the “sedition” overshadowed the positive outcome of the elections, according to the state-run ILNA and Fars news agencies on Friday.

He added, “The goal of the forces of sedition was to uproot the establishment. Without a doubt, last year’s sedition represented a movement that aimed for overthrow.”

Khatami implicitly referred to the slogans of “death to Khamenei [the regime’s Supreme Leader]” and “death to dictator” as well as the tearing of Khamenei and Khomeini’s portraits by the protestors and said, “Those who participated in the sedition insulted the most sacred of sanctities. On the Ashura day [December 27, 2009], they chanted foundation-shattering slogans. … Showing disrespect was another tool used by the forces of sedition because they sought to shatter the sanctity of the leader.”
