In a letter to the rotating EU presidency, Lennart Friden, President of the Friends of a Free Iran and former member of Swedish Parliament, wrote, "We urge you and the European Union to adopt equal measures and policies against the Iranian regime." He continued, "We share the concerns of all peace loving people around the world, thus we believe that in order to avoid another war in the region it is crucial to adopt such policies like the one by the United States."
He denounced the policy of appeasement pursued by the West and said, "That is not only naïve but also extremely dangerous to continue dialog with Iranian regime and hope that it might provide any form of stability and security." He concluded, "It is high time to reconsider European leniency toward mullahs of Iran and instead give the democratic Iranian opposition the recognition and support that they undoubtedly deserve."
