Norway warns terror attack likely in next 12 months

Norwegian intelligence authorities said on Wednesday that the Scandinavian country will ‘likely’ be hit with an act of terror in the coming 12 months.

The terror threat assessment was prepared by Norway’s Joint Counter Terror Center, which is jointly managed by Norway’s Police Security Service (PST) and the Norwegian Intelligence Service.

Norway’s Joint Counter Terror Center said that Norway’s military, police and political decision-makers were vulnerable to terror attacks due to the country’s decision to send troops to Iraq.

The center which was founded a year ago noted that ISIS, as well as other groups, have asked its members to perpetrate terror actions against the countries which have joined the U.S.-led coalition fighting against the group, reports The Associated Press.

PST chief Benedicte Bjornland said in July: “New threats and difficult situations may occur, perhaps with a warning, perhaps without […] We must all be prepared for new threats that may show up. That’s not a state of emergency, it’s the normal state.”

The Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg announced last week that her country will send 120 soldiers to Iraq to join the international coalition fighting against ISIS (ISIL).

The evaluation came as Prime Minister Erna Solberg told Parliament about her government’s decision to send troops to Iraq.

“We will not allow threats from terror organizations dictate our security policy,” Solberg told Norwegian lawmakers.

The Norwegian soldiers joining the anti-ISIS coalition would only provide military training to Iraqi troops.
