Mike Pompeo in Il Giornale: The Urgent Need to Isolate Iran

In an article authored by Mike Pompeo published on June 4, 2024, in Il Giornale, the former U.S. Secretary of State argues for the urgent need to isolate the Iranian regime following the recent death of its president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash. Pompeo asserts that this event presents a pivotal opportunity for Europe to reassess its stance toward the clerical dictatorship ruling Iran.

Raisi, known as the “Butcher of Tehran” for his role in the 1988 mass executions, symbolized the brutality of the regime. His death should remind the international community of the countless victims of the regime’s oppression, such as Mahsa Amini, who was killed by the morality police for not wearing a hijab according to the regime’s standards.

Pompeo criticizes the continued respect given to the Iranian regime by many EU members, urging Europe and the US to stop legitimizing a government that sponsors terror and suppresses its people. He calls for decisive actions, including:

Moreover, Pompeo emphasizes the importance of backing the organized opposition within Iran, which aspires to a peaceful and prosperous future.

“We must do more together to support the organized opposition movement within Iran,” the former US State Secretary writes. “It is the Iranian people, not the regime, who genuinely desire a peaceful and prosperous future for their nation. The internal opposition is why we have seen massive, nationwide protests in recent years. As long as these organized groups continue to push for a vision of a free Iran, we should do our utmost to help them by opposing the brutal regime that seeks to destroy them and steal their wealth.”

He highlights that the Iranian regime remains the principal state sponsor of terror, increasingly powerful through alliances with countries like Russia and China, and a significant obstacle to peace in the Middle East.

Pompeo concludes that it is high time for Europe to recognize these fundamental truths and strive to bring peace and prosperity to the Middle East by isolating the brutal Iranian regime.
