Iraq – Major anti-Maliki protests persist and spread

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in streets of Baghdad, Fallujah, Ramadi, Samara, etc on what appeared to be among the largest since the protests began in December, according to the reports by major news agencies.
Protesters chanted anti Maliki slogans and demanded the international community to stop selling arms to Maliki’s government since they are being used against its citizens, Iraqi TVs reported. The protesters also called on the United Nations to condemn human rights abuse in Iraq.

Last week, seven protesters were killed in Fallujah by armed Iraqi forces. Tribal leaders and political activists called for protests in Fallujah in solidarity with the seven young men killed. Tens of thousands of protesters holding photographs of those killed chanted anti Maliki slogans.

During the past weeks many Iraqi politicians, dignitaries including religious leader’ as well as those participating in anti-Maliki protests have publicly expressed their anger on UN role in Iraq and have called on United Nations to change its current representative in Iraq accusing him of implementing foreign agenda in Iraq and ignoring the demands of protestors.
