Iranian regime rebuts calls to release jailed U.S. citizen

The Iranian regime’s Foreign Ministry said on Sunday that “According to the available information, no US citizen is under arrest or in jails in,” in Iran and the individuals referred to by American officials and media are two Iranian citizens.

The remarks by the Foreign Ministry spokesman comes after President Obama called on Iranian regime to free Pastor Abedini who remains imprisoned in Iran.

On February 6, Mr. Obama said at the annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington that Rev. Abedini is serving eight years in prison in Iran “on charges relating to his Christian beliefs.”

Also earlier this month, a senior American official was quoted as saying that during their meeting on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, US Secretary of State John Kerry had urged Iranian regime’s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to “work cooperatively with us” to help detained “US citizens … Amir Hekmati and Saeed Abedini return home.”
