Iran: Khamenei’s foreign policy will not change, regime ambassador declares

NCRI – The election of Hassan Rouhani does not mean the Iranian regime will change its foreign policy, the regime’s ambassador to Iraq has said.

Hassan Danaifar told the state-run Fars news agency: “Our foreign policy has been determined and it is unchangeable. However, the new president’s views on foreign policy will have an effect.”

His comments come after the Supreme Leader’s representative said that major government decision would still be made by Ali Khamenei following Rohani’s election.

Hossein Shariatmadari wrote in Kayhan daily: “The determination of the government’s major policies is among the authorities of the Leader. Therefore, despite the ruckus of the external enemy and its internal followers, the government’s major policies have not and will not change with election of Rohani.

The presence of Rouhani as the president of the country’s executive branch should lead his supporters and opponents to either hope for or fear any major changes, he said.

Shariatmadari also said that infighting among Khamenei’s supporters was one of the reasons his faction was defeated in the election.

He added: “The positioning of the other candidates against each another in the television debates and their unwillingness to withdraw for the other has caused this concern.

“Therefore, before Hassan Rouhani begins to enjoy the support of those so-called reformists, he must deal with the deviant faction that have infiltrated in the government.”
