Explosive device may have been Iranian: Australian Defence Minister

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is investigating the origins of a roadside bomb that killed an Australian soldier in Afghanistan.

ABC News – The soldier was killed by the improvised explosive device in the southern Oruzgan province while driving a light armoured vehicle back to the Australian base.

Another Australian soldier and three children were wounded in the attack. Similar explosive devices made in Iran are used by insurgents in Iraq, and Defence Minister Brendan Nelson says the origin of the roadside bomb is now being investigated.

"There’s no question that a variety of weapons including improvised explosive devices and explosively formed projectiles and other things are finding their way from Iran into both Iraq and Afghanistan," he said.
But ADF head Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston says he will not speculate on the origin of the bomb before it is analysed.
"Once we’ve done that we’ll have a much better idea where the device may have come from, where it might have been constructed and so forth," he said.
