Erdogan: Iran regime exacerbates situation in region

Iran escalates the situation in the region with aggravation of relations with Saudi Arabia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, TRT Haber TV channel reported Jan. 12.

The authorities in Tehran didn’t take the necessary measures to protect the Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran, said Erdogan earlier, Trend News Agency reported.

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry has also condemned the attack on the embassy of Saudi Arabia in Iran.

Saudi Arabia cut off diplomatic ties with Iran’s regime last week on Sunday after protesters ransacked and set fire to the Saudi Embassy in Tehran and the consulate in Mashhad.

On 5 January, the United Nations Security Council strongly condemned the attack on the Saudi embassy in Tehran.

“The members of the Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the attacks against the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran, and its Consulate General in Mashhad in the Islamic Republic of Iran, which resulted in intrusions into the diplomatic and consular premises, causing serious damage,” said a statement by the 15-member council.

Expressing “deep concern” over the attacks, the council “called on the Iranian authorities to protect diplomatic and consular property and personnel, and to respect fully their international obligations in this regard.”
