Iranians face prison for losing SIM cards

NCRI – Iranians have been warned they face being jailed for up to five years for ‘losing’ their mobile phone SIM card.

Mehdi Mokhtari, chief of the cyber-police in Qazvin Province, said: “Many people buy many SIM cards because they are cheap and easy to purchase, then without paying attention to the legal consequences they give them to others.

“Some throw away their SIM Cards and buy new ones without cancelling the previous one.”

The penalty for this would now be one to five years imprisonment or a fine of 20 to 100 Million Rials ($2,000 to $10,000), Mokhtari was quoted by state-run Fars news agency on April 13.

According to official figures, there are currently 68 million mobile phone in use among Iran’s 75 million population.

During the 2009 public protests, Iranians widely used mobile phones to send pictures and videos of Iranian regime’s crimes outside the country.
