Iran: Tehran heat-wave means water rationing, officials announce

NCRI – Iranians have been warned of water shortages and rationing in the Tehran with temperatures in the capital set to soar to 40C.

Tehran’s Water and Sewage Company said the heat-wave was putting a massive strain on the supply, adding: “If the current situation continues, there will be concerns over providing water for Tehran.

“The use of water in Tehran has reached 3.” million cubic meter in the past few days. Reports from the weather office claim that the temperature in Tehran will climb to 40C. This will lead to an increase in water usage, while

the capacity of the tankers, the distribution network and Tehran’s cisterns cannot handle such a sudden increase.”

Iran’s land surface covers 165 million hectares, more than half of which is uncultivated. A total of 11.5 million hectares is under cultivation at any time, of which 3.5 million hectares were irrigated in 1987, and the rest watered by rain.

Mismanagement of water resources has exacerbated these issues, and climate change is likely to significantly worsen the problem in the future.

Alireza Daemi, the regime’s deputy energy minister said in that in 1960, 6,000 cubic meters of water were available per person but by 1990 it had been reduced to 2,000 cubic meters per person, and the availability of water would be 1,000 cubic meters per person in 2025, and fall to a quarter of that by 2033.

He added: “Every year the situation in Iran will become more difficult.”
