Iran’s penal population is three times the capacity of prisons

NCRI – According to Mehr news agency, affiliated with Iranian regime’s Intelligence Ministry, on Wednesday September 7, Aliasghar Jahangiri, Head of Iran’s Prisons Organization, said that prisons space is not commensurate with the penal population and admitted that “Iran’s penal population is three times the capacity of the prisons.”

The head of prison organizations, who was speaking at a session to introduce Director General of the prisons in Northern Khorasan province, revealed: “In 2014, 37 thousand people entered the prisons in just one day.”

He also said that 20 percent of those who experience more than one year imprisonment, their families are at the risk of collapse after they are released from the prison. “Those prisoners who are married, after being released face problems such as divorce, drug abuse, school dropout children, runaway daughters and other social problems,” he said.

He added: “More than 50 percent of men and 70 percent of women who are in prisons are married. Therefore, when issuing the arrest warrant, it is necessary to pay special attention to the situation of these families.”
