Iran-Iraq war dead remains buried at in public squares in cities across Iran

The remains of bodies of five unknown soldiers killed in the Iran-Iraq War were buried in a public square in Tehran on December 31. Simultaneous with Tehran other burials took place in Eastern Azerbaijan, Ardebil and Isfahan provinces.
In Tehran, the remains were buried in Imam Hossein Square, one of the main squares in the city.

Often such burials are attended by members of Basij paramilitary force and is used as a means of show of force and intimidation of public.

In the past few years the burials have been faced with much public protests.

The Iranian regime buried some remains at university campuses across Iran. Student widely criticized the act by holding protests.

The Iran-Iran War from September of 1980 to August of 1988 left hundreds of thousands dead on both sides. The conflict could have ended 20 months after it began, with satisfactory conditions for Iran, including compensation and Iraq’s recognition of the post-1975 border.

But Khomeini and the ruling mullahs, to satisfy their messianic ambitions, continued the hostilities. The conflict dragged on another six years, becoming the longest conventional war in the 20th century and one of the most devastating in terms of casualties and costs.
