Iran: Compulsory military service to be extended

Iran is to extend compulsory military service in the country from 21 to 24 months, chief conscription officer was quoted by state- run media as saying.

Brigadier General Moussa Kamali added that in the case of being married, the term will be cut down by three months for each child.

In Iran, military service is mandatory for all males at the age of 18. but those who attend college immediately after high school can postpone military service

Women are exempted from military service in the country of 77 million, whose birth rate has been in decline, while young Iranian men living abroad can pay an exemption fee.

A three-month reduction could also apply for service in “operations and security zones”, Kamali said, apparently referring to border.
