Western diplomats puzzled by Iranian regime’s offer in nuclear talks

The Washington Post – Negotiations began in the Kazakh city of Almaty with Iranian diplomats unveiling what they described as a “comprehensive proposal” for ending international tensions over Iran’s advances in nuclear technology.”

“Western diplomats who viewed the Iranian offer said it fell short of expectations. Iran had been expected to respond to a proposal put forward five weeks ago by the so-called P5-plus-1 powers, which includes the United States and four other permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, along with Germany. Instead, the Iranians appeared to be repeating talking points from a previous round of negotiations that fell apart last spring, said one Western diplomat, who insisted on anonymity in describing the Iranian position.”

“There has not yet been a clear and concrete response,” said a Western diplomat, who described the P5-plus-1 diplomats as “somewhat puzzled” by what the Iranians had put on the table. “There were some interesting but not fully explained general comments on our ideas.”
