US offers to link missile defence with Russia: report

dpa  – The United States has offered to integrate some of its missile defence systems with Russia in an effort to ease Moscow’s opposition to the US using sites in Poland and the Czech Republic, the New York Times reported Saturday.

The paper cited a military official as saying the US has offered "fundamental integration of our systems," in part on the insistence of European allies concerned that Russia’s opposition could lead to a Cold War-style arms race between the two powers.

The United States wants 10 interceptor missiles in Poland and a radar site in the Czech Republic within five or six years, in large part to counter Iran’s growing ballistic missile capability.

The integration offer is part of a package of incentives on defence cooperation – including on developing future missile defence technology – that would be discussed with Russia in the coming weeks, the Times reported. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defence Secretary Robert Gates were set to lead the talks.

US officials have in recent months made frequent trips to various European countries to alleviate their concerns about missile defence and have insisted it will not offset the strategic balance of power on the continent.
