US dismisses Tehran invitation to western representatives to visit nuke sites

NCRI – The US has rejected an invitation by the Iranian regime to representatives from western countries to visit its nuclear sites, saying that the regime must instead comply with its international obligations and cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Fearing more sanctions by western countries and in an attempt to calm pressures before a scheduled round of talks in January with the P5+1 (permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) countries in Turkey, the clerical regime invited representatives from European countries to visit its nuclear sites.

According to the Associated Press on Monday, a U.S. State Department spokesman said the Iranian regime’s continued enrichment activities are in violation of U.N. Security Council resolutions and “demonstrate Iran’s disregard for its international obligations regarding its nuclear program.”

Mark Toner added, “Acts such as Iran’s invitation to several countries to tour its facilities are not a substitute for Iran fulfilling its obligations to cooperate with the IAEA and will not divert attention away from the core issues regarding Iran’s nuclear program.”
