UN Security Council extends mandate of Iran sanctions monitors

The United Nations Security Council on Tuesday unanimously adopted a resolution renewing the mandate of a panel of experts monitoring sanctions on the Iranian regime for its nuclear proliferation.

Diplomats in the UN headquarters said no action would be taken to change the monitoring of sanctions until a final deal on curbing Iran’s nuclear program was reached, AFP reported.

The panel of experts was set up in 2006 and presents regular reports to a Security Council sanctions committee on whether the Iranian regime is abiding by the UN sanctions resolutions.

Former Georgian foreign minister Salome Zurabishvili currently heads the eight-member panel of experts.

The permanent Security Council members – Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States – plus Germany are hoping to reach a deal with the Iranian regime to curb its nuclear activities in exchange for relief in sanctions that has targeted the regime’s officials and entities.
