UN Secretary-General urged Iranian regime to cooperate with IAEA

Ban Ki-moonNCRI – “I encourage the country's leaders to continue their cooperation with the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) with a view to demonstrate the entirely peaceful nature of Iran's nuclear programme,” UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday in New York.

Speaking at a preparatory session for a nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT) conference scheduled for May 2010 in New York, Mr. Ban Ki-moon said that new world challenges such as the economic crisis and the swine flu, must not overshadow nuclear disarmament efforts.

He said: “Nuclear weapons remain an apocalyptic threat … We cannot afford to place disarmament and non-proliferation on a backburner.”

The conference, which gathers NPT signatory states, is held every five years since the NPT was ratified in 1970.

The Secretary General’s appeal comes amid Iranian regime’s continued defiance of the world community’s concern over the nature of its nuclear project.
