In 1987, the IRGC hired with high salary 14 Sharif University graduates.
In 1991, research activities started in Sharif University to obtain enrichment capability using centrifuges.
The role of Sharif University in the regime’s nuclear needs
In 1991, the special nuclear unit of IRGC in a report to Rafsanjani explained that the problem and barrier to obtain nuclear weapon was lack of cooperation by foreign countries to provide resources and key techniques. Following that, Rafsanjani organized a joint meeting between the special nuclear unit and Atomic Energy Organization. In that meeting they reached the following lines or strategy for obtaining nuclear weapon:
1) Activate several resources from various countries, and by illicit and secret trades obtain nuclear facilities and technology.
2) Send Iranian engineers and specialists to European countries under various pretexts and gather intelligence on the required technology.
3) Maximum use of the collapse of Soviet Union to recruit experts (scientists) and use specialized possibilities for uranium enrichment.
Sharif technical University was one of the most important organs that was active to obtain nuclear facilities and technology. During these years despite its disclosure several times, it has been active. Two examples of these activities in 1991 are:
1) In 1991, Sharif University sought to buy 45 Fluorine gas cylinders from British company Air Pirocatsen. This gas can be used in production of Hexafluoride Uranium. Some of the merchandize was transferred to Sharif University but the British government blocked the rest of it.
2) In 1991, Sharif University to obtain from Germany specialized magnets which can be useful in focused nuclear core activities.
The Defense Ministry has been used Imam Hossein and Malek-Ashtar Universities to move forward nuclear activities for years, and the Atomic Energy Organization has used Sharif Technical University and Amir-Kabir University.
