Japan slaps additional sanctions against Iran over suspected nuclear program

Japan FlagAP – Japan says it has imposed additional sanctions against Iran over its suspected nuclear program.

Trade ministry official Hideaki Fujisawa said the Cabinet of Prime Minister Naoto Kan approved the measures Friday. Japan has decided to impose the sanctions after the United Nations had asked Tokyo to take punitive measures against Iran.

The sanctions include an asset freeze on 88 entities, 15 banks and 24 individuals. Japan has previously frozen assets on 75 entities and 41 individuals.

The United Nations slapped a fourth round of sanctions on Iran in early June. The West accuses Iran of seeking to develop atomic weapons, a charge that Tehran denies.
