Italian committee calls on Iraq to implement EP resolution on Iranian opposition

NCRI – The Italian Committee of Parliamentarians and Citizens for a Free Iran, in a statement welcomed the adoption of a resolution regarding the rights of the residents of Ashraf City (Camp Ashraf) in Iraq, where some 3,500 members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) live in exile.

The Italian committee of Parliamentarians and Citizens for a Free Iran in a statement called on Iraqi government to put an end to the blockade of Ashraf and to respect the legal status of residents of Camp Ashraf as "protected persons" under the Geneva Conventions.

“Unless the Iraqi government does provide written guarantees for respecting the resolution, there exists no other solution but an international protection for Ashraf Camp. And in this case the United States, according to an agreement signed in 2003 with the unarmed residents of Ashraf, is obliged to assume full responsibility for the protection of Ashraf camp,” statement added.

The Committee reminded the Italian government that based on the principle of  R to P, as stated in Geneva Conventions, it is obliged to observe the protection of Ashraf camp, and do everything possible to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe in Camp Ashraf .

The EP resolution, adopted on April 24,  reiterates the status of Ashraf residents as protected persons under the Fourth Geneva Convention and  'Urges the Iraqi Prime Minister to ensure that no action is taken by the Iraqi authorities which violates the human rights of the Camp Ashraf residents and to clarify the government's intentions towards them; calls on the Iraqi authorities to protect the lives, and the physical and moral integrity of the Camp Ashraf residents and to treat them in accordance with the obligations under the Geneva Conventions, notably not to forcibly displace, deport, expel or repatriate them in violation of the principle of non-refoulement'.
