Exiled opposition leader, Rajvai, blamed for delay of nuclear meeting

Agance France Presse, TEHRAN – Iran decided to delay today’s meeting in Brussels with EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana because of the possible presence in Brussels of an exiled opposition leader, the Iranian ISNA news agency quoted an unidentified official as saying.

The official was referring to Maryam Rajavi, leader of the National Council of Resistance of Iran — a banned opposition group connected to the Iraq-based armed People’s Mujahedeen. Rajavi, who is based in France, is one of the harshest critics of Iran’s 27-year-old clerical regime.

‘The Europeans had been told to prevent the presence of the hypocrites’ chief in Brussels in this period, but they were late to act. This was the reason for the cancellation of the trip,’ the ISNA news agency quoted the official as saying.

Iran’s chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani will instead meet with Solana in Brussels tomorrow.
