CALL FOR INSTANT SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN’S ‘NUCLEAR’ MULLAHS

CALL FOR INSTANT SANCTIONS AGAINST IRAN’S ‘NUCLEAR’ MULLAHSBy Chris Moncrieff, PA

The Press Association, 28 April 2006 – The United Nations Security Council should impose immediate and comprehensive sanctions against the Iranian regime in a bid to stop the enrichment of uranium there, a senior figure in the National Council of Resistance of Iran urged today.

Hossein Abedini, senior member of the Council’s Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a statement that it was clear the regime would not meet the Security Council’s requirements at the end of the 30-day deadline.

“The clerical regime will never abandon nuclear weapons because it considers them to be a strategic guarantee for its survival.

“We expect a report verifying that the mullahs have not co-operated and have not provided any new information and have not put a halt on their nuclear enrichment.

“Now, the international community must act firmly and decisively.”

Mr Abedini: “We believe it is time for the imposition of immediate and comprehensive sanctions against the regime by the Security Council.

“We believe that neither the abysmal policy of appeasement nor a military attack is the answer and that there is a third option: the definitive response to the mullahs’ nuclear threat is regime change and the establishment of democracy in Iran.

“By virtue of its vast popular base, the Iranian Resistance is capable of realising this change.” He added.
