Australia will back US on Iran sanctions: Downer

Australia (ABC News) – Foreign Affairs Minister Alexander Downer has indicated Australia would back extra sanctions against Iran.

Last week the US imposed a range of penalties to try to cripple Iran’s nuclear program and Mr Downer says Australia would support significant financial sanctions in appropriate circumstances.

"I think there’s every chance that Australia will support, for example, financial sanctions against Iran unless Iran decides very soon that it’s going to suspend its uranium enrichment program," he said.

"So far they’ve shown no sign of doing that so I think there is a real possibility."
