MEK: COVID-19 Death Toll Pass 70,300, Iran Regime’s Inaction and Cover-Up

Coronavirus outbreak in Tehran, July 2020

The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/ MEK) announced that the Covid-19 fatalities had passed 70,300. This is indeed a humanitarian catastrophe and direct result of Iranian regime’s inaction and cover-up.

While other governments described COVID-19 as a “threat,” the regime’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, called it a “test.” In fact, Khamenei and his regime saw the COVID-19 as an opportunity. Riddled with domestic, regional, and international crises, the regime seized the moment and with its criminal policy of cover-up, then herd immunity, it has been desperately trying to use this pandemic as a tool of oppression.

The mullahs’ desperate need for execution and suppression

Iranian regime officials confirmed that on July 8 a man in Mashhad was executed for drinking alcohol on multiple occasions. Apart from the cruelty of this act, it is a manifestation of the regime’s reaction to its many crises such as the coronavirus outbreakeconomic deadlockconflicts between various currents of the regime, and its fear of another nationwide uprising.

On one hand, the regime has increased its psychological warfare and propaganda against the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) and is pressurizing the families of MEK members, while on the other hand, it has begun a new wave of executions of prisoners. In this regard, executing a man for drinking alcohol is unique and unprecedented, even for the brutal regime of the mullahs.

The victim was imprisoned a year ago and had no other charges but drinking alcohol. The remarks of the victim’s lawyer indicate that the regime was in a hurry to carry out this execution.
