As the world celebrated International Literacy Day, basic literacy remains a distant dream for many girl children and women in Iran.
International Literacy Day, celebrated annually on 8 September, is an opportunity to highlight improvements in world literacy rates, and reflect on the world’s remaining literacy challenges. Universal access to quality education and learning opportunities is among the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, with SDG4 seeking to ensure that all young people achieve literacy and numeracy and that adults who lack these skills are given the opportunity to acquire them. The 2019 theme focuses on “Literacy and Multilingualism” as multilingualism is crucial to development in today’s globalized and digitalized world and has serious implications for literacy in policies and practice.

Iran: Workers, college students and employees protest regime’s corruption
A group of Tehran University students gathered in front of the Privatization Organization building on Monday, September 7, protesting unwarranted forfeitures to the private sector.
The students showed their protests by holding placards reading “Evict corrupt managers from the Haft Tappeh Sugarcane Company,” “Corrupt privatization is a disaster for national production,” and “Corrupt privatization is the cause of unemployment,” according to the HRANA news agency.

Iran: Three political prisoners transferred to quarantine section of notorious jail
Reporting by PMOI/MEK: Political prisoners Majid Assadi, Mohammad Amir Khizi, and Payam Shakiba have been transferred by authorities from ward 209 of Tehran’s Evin prison to Gohardasht prison of Karaj, a city located west of Tehran. This transfer took place on Monday, September 7, and the three political prisoners are placed in the quarantine section of Gohardasht prison. It is also worth noting that ward 209 of Evin prison is under the control and authority of the regime’s Ministry of Intelligence and Security (MOIS).

Major online conference by Iranian associations, keeps attention focused on violent repression in Iran, expresses support for organized opposition
Saturday’s conference was organized in part as a celebration for the 56th anniversary of the founding of the NCRI’s main constituent group, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI), also known as the MEK. That group has been credited as a major driving force behind the uprisings in January 2018 and November 2019. As such, it has also been a particular target of repression both during those uprisings and in their aftermath.

Political prisoner Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee: Life does not exist in Qarchak Prison
Political prisoner Golrokh Ebrahimi Iraee sent a letter from the notorious Qarchak Prison on the anniversary of the executions of three Kurdish political prisoners, Zanyar and Loghman Moradi and Ramin Hossein Panahi.
Describing Qarchak Prison as “the largest women’s prison in the Middle East,” she wrote in this shocking letter, “Life does not exist” in this prison and “this is what could be said in a nutshell.”

Torture of Political Prisoners for Forced Television Confessions
In a tweet on September 5, 2020, the sister of political prisoner Ali Younesi, an award-winning student at the Sharif University of Technology who has been in prison for the past five months, wrote, “On Wednesday (September 2), my brother Ali Younesi was told to accept the charges against him in a televised confession, and in which case he will receive a life sentence instead of the death penalty. After five months of detention, solitary confinement, and public interrogation, they have been insisting for a TV interview, by threatening and pressuring (him) for the past three weeks.”

The number of victims in Tehran is 24,345, Khorasan Razavi 7,164, Mazandaran 4,854, Isfahan 4,574, Lorestan 4,402, Semnan 1,307, Yazd 1,249, Qazvin 874, and Ilam 852.

WHAT ARE THE IRAN PROTESTS OF 2019?
Tuesday, September 8, 2020, marks the 297th day since the beginning of the nationwide Iran protests.
The People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) has identified 755 of the more than 1500 protesters killed by the regime so far.
Mrs. Maryam Rajavi the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) has called on the United Nations to urgently send an international fact-finding mission to Iranian prisons to meet with the detainees.
