UK government should condemn executions in Iran – British lawyer

NCRI – In a letter addressed to the British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Mr. Malcolm Fowler of the International Human Rights Committee of the Law Society of England and Wales called for an immediate action to save lives of the political prisoners in Iran.

He noted in his letter: "Since the summer of last year, when Iran’s new radical President, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, took office, the human rights situation in Iran has drastically deteriorated. Summary arrests, torture, inhumane punishments, attacks on freedom of speech and execution are the hallmarks of this regime, which is despised by the Iranian people."

Referring to the execution of political prisoner Hojjat Zamani, a member of the People’s Mojahedin of Iran, Mr. Fowler said: "This is the most outrageous and flagrant abuse of the rights of political prisoners in Iran. It reminds many Iranians of the mass executions that took place in Iran in the latter half of 1988, when some 30,000 political prisoners were executed."

He ended by urging the Prime Minister that, "it is incumbent on our government to condemn the actions of the Iranian regime, including the execution of Mr. Zamani, and to do all it can to defend the rights of political prisoners in Iran."
