Tens of thousands of exiled Iranians from across the world staged a gathering in the Paris suburb of Taverny to call for “democratic change” in their country and support more international sanctions against the Tehran regime. The keynote speaker was Maryam Rajavi, who said that the Iranian regime “has lost its potential for conciliation” after the popular protests in 2009.

Shahin Ghobadi, a member of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, said, “The international community must support the Iranian people so that they can bring change to Iran themselves and this is the message of the Paris gathering.”

Guest speakers included former US representative at the UN and former Spanish prime minister Jose Maria Aznar.

Aznar said, “The international community lost an important opportunity last year to lend strong support those freedom fighters who poured into Iranian streets. We are now adopting sanctions but I do not think they are enough.”

A statement called for more extensive sanctions. The NCRI, which includes the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, announced that this declaration was signed by 3,500 members of parliament from European countries and the United States.
