Text of Mr. Polčák’s remarks:

“Hello. We in the European Parliament are concerned about human rights in Iran which should not be compromised for business and economic interests. After Rouhani became president at least 2,300 people have been executed. He has not done anything to stop these executions which have made Iran the number one country in the world per capita for executions.

Recently we had Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the Iranian opposition leader, in the European Parliament. We support her goals for a secular, free Iran and especially her 10-point plan that calls for the abolishment of the death penalty, which is a very brave move in the Muslim world. This gives hope for the future.

What we can do in Europe is to call on the EU and our own governments that we cannot have ‘business as usual’ with this regime. We have to be on the side of the Iranian people who are in pain under this Islamic fundamentalist regime.

As a Member of the European Parliament from the Czech Republic [I can say that] our people have suffered because of the appeasement policy in Europe. So we should learn from history and put democracy and human rights as our guidelines for policy-making. Let us all work for a free Iran. Thank you. Hope!”

Members of the European Parliament have spoken out in support of human rights and democracy in Iran through support for the democratic opposition led by Mrs. Maryam Rajavi.
