Spanish satellite operator drops Iran State TV

NCRI, Paris – News agencies are reporting that Spanish satellite operator Hispasat has dropped broadcasts by two of Iranian state broadcaster IRIB’s channels because of EU sanctions against its chief.

The English- and Spanish-language channels Press TV and Hispan TV were no longer available via Hispasat from Friday because of the sanctions against IRIB head Ezzatollah Zarghami according to AFP.

No immediate comment was available from Hispasat.

Iranian state broadcasters are known to be directed by a propaganda committee – Higher Policy Council – at IRIB under supervision from the office of Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, with participation from the presidential office, the parliament, and the judiciary. According to reporting from the NCRI and PMOI (MEK) in the past, the Press Directorate of Iran’s National Security Council, provides propaganda directives to the Higher Policy Council as well. All programming is aimed at disseminating disinformation to serve Iran’s foreign and domestic policy goals to maintain the regime’s rule, defame its opposition, deceive foreign news sources, and signal false information to the world about Iran’s intent and positions. The state media has also been complicit in broadcasting confessions by torture victims and participating in the intimidation of the Iranian people.
