Retired law lord calls for deproscription of People’s Mojahedin of Iran

Press Association, July 25 – A retired law lord called for the lifting of a UK ban on a militant Iranian group that campaigns against that country’s hard-line theocratic regime. The People’s Mujaheddin of Iran (PMoI), which was proscribed in the UK in 2001 as a terrorist organisation, is appealing to the home secretary, John Reid, to have the ban lifted. Former law lord, Lord Slynn of Hadley, warned that unless such bans were carefully reviewed, "there is a serious risk not only of injustice to individuals but to freedom of speech, and of freedom of political opinion being ventilated being abused".
