Patrick Kennedy: Martin Kobler must resign over Camp Liberty attack

And America must not stand idly by while more innocent Liberty residents are murdered by the Iranian secret police and their collaborators in the Iraqi government, Mr Kennedy told a conference of 1,500 Iranian-Americans in Washington DC on Saturday.

It was not enough to expect the UN to deal with the crisis – the US must keep its promise to protect those inside Liberty, and return them as soon as possible to the relative safety of Camp Ashraf, he said.

Mr Kennedy added: “All of us here in Washington DC can not stand by with the word of this country being violated.

“Liberty is a hoax.  We need an action plan today.

“We need the United States to come out today and say they are for protecting Camp Liberty.

“Let’s not make any mistake about it.  This cannot be laid off on the United Nations.  The United States has a responsibility to those six people who were killed.

Mr Kennedy recalled how Mr Kobler’s former advisor Tahar Boumedra quit after an agreement last year between the UN and Iraq to protect Liberty and improve squalid living conditions was not honoured.

The agreement was signed by Mr Kobler, Mr Kennedy said, adding: “We know now that the blood of those innocent martyrs that were killed last night are on Martin Kobler’s hands today.  Today, today Martin Kobler ought to resign his position at the United Nations.
