Munich: Call for sanctions on Iran, support for opposition

NCRI – Hundreds of supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran and the NCRI, coalition of Iranian opposition groups and personalities, staged a rally in Munich as the 42nd Conference on Security Policy discussed the threats posed by the Iranian clerical regime last weekend.

About 300 high-ranking delegates from 50 states, including more than 40 defense and foreign ministers, attended the forum. These include German Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, German Defense Minister Franz-Josef Jung, German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, U.S. Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, French Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie, British Secretary of State for Defense John Reid, and NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer.

Demonstrators called for tough and comprehensive sanctions against the fundamentalist regime ruling Iran and stressed that time to end the policy of appeasement has come and any conciliation with the regime would be considered as a sign of weakness on behalf of the world community.

A participant from Hamburg with close ties with business community told reporters on the scene that the regime is in dire need of trade relations with the West. "The clerics need the West more than the West needs the regime. It is a matter of survival for the regime. There has been widespread protests around the country due to the regime’s incompetence in managing the economy. More than 80 percent of Iranians live under poverty line according to official figures," said Amir who keeps a close contact with businesses dealing with the Middle East in Hamburg. "The current stand off has hit trade with Iran and many Iranian businesses have moved their assets out of the country due to uncertain future."

Solution to Iran problem is regime change by the people and their organized resistance, said another Iranian demonstrator. Badri, 45, from Tehran who has been living in exile for the past three years emphasized her support to Mrs. Maryam Rajavi’s third option for democratic change in Iran and said that no one wants war, neither Iranians nor people around the world. "Leave Iran to Iranians, they will deal with the mullahs. Remove the terror label from the PMOI and all restrictions imposed on the Iranian Resistance by the West, then you will see the uprooting of the mullahs by people."

The rally received extensive support from the public and the media, particularly the local tv and radio networks took interest on their demands and carried reports in their broadcasts.
