Leading Afghans demand UN return PMOI (MEK) members to Ashraf

NCRI – Leading Afghan personalities have blamed Iraq for the deadly attack on Camp Liberty and demanded that the United Nations urgently returned its Iranian residents to Ashraf.

A group of 15 members of parliament and 115 doctors , lawyers, professors, human rights activists issued their demands in a strongly-worded statement and letters to UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon.

The statement said the return of members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) from Liberty to Ashraf was the only solution to prevent repeated crimes against humanity following the February 9 missile attack that left eight dead and more than 100 injured.

It added: “This attack carried out by the Iranian mullahs’ regime and the Iraqi government promoted a wave of world condemnations, including from UN Secretary General Ban Ki moon, the UNHCR, the US State Department, the president of EUs foreign policy Baroness Ashton, Italy’s foreign minister and the foreign minister of Norway.

“In a plan to make 3,100 members of the legitimate resistance of the Iranian people homeless, they were forcibly transferred to Liberty which is 80 times smaller than Ashraf – there home of 26 years.

“This camp has no buildings and only consists of a complex of worn out trailers placed tightly next to each other which are highly vulnerable to any rocket and missile attack. The Iranian resistance has warned the UN and US officials many times about this, including in March and April of 2012.

“We demand that the UNHCR commissioner Antonio Guterres urgently recognize the collective refugee status of the residents of Liberty and protect their lives.

“The UN Security Council and other international bodies must oblige the government of Iraq to open the doors of Liberty to their lawyers, reporters, parliamentary delegations and US, European and Arab political personalities, so that they can see the unacceptable and dangerous situation of the residents.

“We also demand that President Obama, the UN Secretary General, the High Commissioner for Refugees and High Commissioner for Human Rights to immediately return PMOI (MEK) members from Liberty to Ashraf which is much more secure. The US government and UN have responsibility for the security of these refugees.”
