Iraqi parliamentary committee calls for release of 36 PMOI members

NCRI – The parliamentary Committee of Friendship with Iranian People in Iraq issued a statement calling for the release of 36 members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) taken hostage by Iraqi forces.

“Despite last week’s call by 23 members of the Iraqi Parliament from various political spectrums for the release of 36 Iranian refugees of Camp Ashraf, which came in an order by the Khalis court judge and approved by the Khalis prosecutor, regrettably, there has not been any progress in the case. The illegal imprisonment of wounded people who are on hunger strike continues,” the statement said.

“Previously, dozens of the Iraqi parliament members condemned the inhumane raid on Ashraf. The 36 refugees have lived at Ashraf for more than two decades, with no problems. They have been the guests of Iraqi people have lived within the framework of the international laws and conventions.  The 36 are considered protected persons and their presence in Iraq is lawful. 

“The Committee emphasizes of the importance of full respect for the independence of the Iraqi judiciary. It also reminds of the necessity of complying with the international humanitarian laws. The committee also calls on the Iraqi government not to embark on actions which in any way would harm the 36 refugees. The Iraqi government should immediately implement the court order by releasing them.”
