NCRI – On Wednesday, exiled Iranians gathered in Brussels, the headquarters of the European Parliament, to express support for the November 25 resolution of the parliament in support of the rights of Camp Ashraf residents in Iraq.
The rally was held simultaneous with a visit by the UN Secretary General Special Representative for Iraq Ad Melkert.
Iranians called on the United Nations and the UNSG representative to enact urgent measures to lift inhumane restrictions and to end a psychological war and a 22-month-long siege on Ashraf, home to 3,400 members of the main Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK).
They also urged a permanent UNAMI presence in Ashraf as well as the implementation of the European Parliament resolutions passed on November 25, 2010 and April 24, 2009.
The rally came hours before the President-elect of the Iranian Resistance, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, visited the European Parliament. A recorded message by Mrs. Rajavi was broadcast for the attendees.
A number of political, human rights, and religious figures joined parliamentarians, jurists and committee chairmen and members of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) to speak at the event. Among other speakers were relatives of the residents of Ashraf, representatives of Iranian communities and youths living in Belgium.
European parliamentarians attending the gathering were: Jim Higgins, Struan Stevenson, Potito Salatto, Marco Scurria, and Rosario Crocetta.
A number of prominent supporters of Ashraf were also in attendance and spoke at the event in front of the European Parliament headquarters, including former Algerian Prime Minister Sid Ahmad Ghozali, former MEP Paolo Casaca, and Dutch bishop Robert Rosenbaum.
Speakers and attendees voiced support for Ashraf as a formidable barrier to the Iranian regime’s export of fundamentalism and terrorism, describing Ashraf as the strategic epicenter of freedom and hope for the Iranian people.
They also emphasized their determination to guarantee the protection and rights of Ashraf residents and to end the crimes committed jointly by the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and the regime’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, against the residents.
The rally called on UN and US officials to enact measures to end the violation of international laws and conventions when it comes to Camp Ashraf and to urgently work to implement European Parliament resolutions and international conventions in this regard.
