Iranian regime refuses basic treatment to political prisoners

Hamid HaeriNCRI – On Thursday, December 2, political prisoner Jafar Sarbandi in Ward 4 of Gohardasht prison in Karaj, west of Tehran, died due to lack of medical care by prison officials. Only one week after being transferred to this prison, he had been forced to sleep in cold outside prison bathrooms due to large number of detainees in prison cells, and also the shortage of minimum space to sleep. He had no facilities for sleep.

The hygiene and medical conditions of Gohardasht Prison have deteriorated to unprecedented levels, and in addition to torture, Iran’s freedom-seeking activists are convicted to a gradual death from various diseases and lack of the least medical attention. The conditions regarding female political prisoners are far worse.

In solitary confinement, the prisoners lack basic supplies in the winter cold, most of whom suffering from numerous diseases. Prison officials do not even allow the prisoners’ families to provide necessary medication to their detained children and relatives.

Political prisoner Masha’allah (Hamid) Haeri is in a very critical condition due to internal bleeding, heart disease and other illnesses after two heart attacks.

He was arrested and transferred to Evin Prison a year ago after being hospitalized in ICU following a car accident. During his confinement, he has been subjected to severe tortures. He has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and exile charged with ‘moharebeh’ (enmity against God) for visiting his child in Camp Ashraf and supporting the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran.

Jafar Kazemi, who is in distress from sciatic illness after enduring serious tortures, is currently suffering from extreme pains. The officials in the prison’s clinic even refrain from treating his teeth which have been broken under torture and continuously cause him severe pains. Kazemi was arrested and sentenced to death for visiting his son in Ashraf.

Mohsen Dokmehchi, a noble Tehran Bazaar merchant, is in a critical condition due to the seriousness of his illness. He has spent the past 15 months in Tehran’s notorious Evin Pirson for having his daughter in Ashraf and his assistance to helpless families of political prisoners.
