Iranian Regime MFA Spox Calls for Western Restrictions on MEK

The Iranian regime’s Foreign Ministry has once again formally implored Western nations to stop the activities of the Iranian Resistance. A correspondent from the regime’s official news, assigned to raise this question during today’s press conference on May 14, asked the Foreign Ministry spokesman, “In recent weeks, it’s been observed that leaders of the hypocrites grouplet [regime’s pejorative to defame the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran] have been actively lobbying various European nations, including Italy, the UK, Germany, and even the US Congress, to intensify sanctions against Iran and compel the Europeans to activate the snapback mechanism. I seek the official diplomatic stance on this matter.”

Cautiously reading from his notes and following the customary slander against the MEK, Naser Kanaani, the regime’s MFA, said, “Should these countries heed the hypocrites’ counsel, it obviously prompts serious doubts about their political acumen and foresight.”

Kanaani then deftly shifted focus to Tehran’s evasion of sanctions and the conspicuous inertia among Western powers.

“Those nations which have persistently enforced unilateral and unlawful sanctions against the Islamic Republic,” he remarked, “should critically evaluate the consequences of their actions. They must acknowledge the result of these unjust sanctions and, consequently, it’s obvious that the hypocrites find themselves compelled, each passing day, to seek out nations still inclined to echo their misguided hostilities against Iran. Simultaneously, the sanctioning nations themselves must engage in a sober reckoning of their past missteps and recalibrate their flawed policies accordingly.'”

The incident, combined with the Iranian regime’s recent launch of a demonization campaign against the Iranian Resistance through former or affiliated figures abroad, underscores Tehran’s deep-seated apprehension.

The correspondent, commissioned by the Foreign Ministry spokesperson, points to the meetings between Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, with representatives and lawmakers from various countries.

In these meetings, Mrs. Rajavi called for the terrorist designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), activating the snapback mechanism under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, and declaring the Iranian regime as a threat to world peace and security under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. However, what the state-affiliated journalist dared not raise was Mrs. Rajavi’s fourth and primary demand, which is the formal recognition of the Iranian people’s right to struggle and overthrow the clerical regime.

However, what official authorities of the regime cannot articulate, their peers express it with clarity and candor. The state-run website “Alef,” run by Ahmad Tavakoli, former head of the Parliament Research Center, wrote on May 12, “The events of the autumn of 2022 proved that the grand project of the MEK has deeply rooted itself across a broad spectrum and to the core of the opposition to the Islamic Republic.”

The source further adds, “Contemplating the surrounding developments indicates a dangerous future, the disregard of which will have dire consequences… In the shadow of the negligence of cultural custodians the intellectual bankruptcy and mundanity of the educational and media system, and various rifts becoming more apparent day by day, the discourse of the MEK is being disseminated to a segment of the Iranian population through attractive and diverse cultural packages.”

Concluding, the website warns, “These efforts, alongside destructive cultural activities aimed at influencing the minds of Iranian youth, should open the eyes of the cultural custodians of the country to many bitter truths. If we neglect, we will find ourselves surrounded by young people, who due to a lack of proper understanding of historical realities and because of economic and social rifts, will be drawn to the hidden discourse of the MEK, which has no parallel in crime.”
