Iran: Second day of protests by Tehran University students

Iran: Second day of protests by Tehran University students NCRI – On Sunday, 1,500 students protested for the second day running in Tehran University campus.

The protesters grew in number and their slogans were directed at the regime’s leaders. The students shouted, "Death to dictator," "We don’t want an autocratic rule, we don’t want a suppressive police force," "Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is behind corruption and discrimination," and "Student dies but will not be humiliated."

The students boycotted their lectures and took to the campus in protest to imprisonment of their classmates, summoning of fellow students to disciplinary committees by the university administrators, and segregation of male and female students in school cafeteria and other public places.

As was the case on Saturday, the Special Units of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reinforced the regular campus security guards to contain the demonstration by using water canons. However, the students broke the gates and clashed with the IRGC Special Units and the State Security Forces (SSF) agents in the surrounding streets.

Dozens of students were injured and taken to nearby hospital. Deputy Tehran University chancellor tried to clam students by making promises to meet with their demands but the students turned him away by attacking his bodyguards.

Students dispersed late evening but warned the authorities that their action would go on if their demands were not met.
