The Friends of a Free Iran (FOFI) Group at the European Parliament Condemns Ms. Angelika Beer’s Trip to Iran in Support of the Iranian Regime

The Friends of a Free Iran parliamentary group, in a resolution passed on December 18, 2007, condemned Ms. Angelika Beer and her delegation’s visit to Iran, which through the exploitation of slogans of peace and human rights, was in reality carried out to placate and appease the mullahs in Iran.

The resolution read in part,

1. Iranian regime has waged war against democratic forces in Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine and Afghanistan. We reiterate that the peace slogan, if not intertwined with the rejection of the religious dictatorship ruling Iran, will only serve the Iranian regime and its suppressive policies.

2. We condemn the naive attempts at appeasement by Ms. Angelika Beer, MEP, in her position as the head of the European Parliament’s Delegation to Iran, during their recent visit to that country.  On 11th December, while Ms Beer pathetically chastised representatives of the fascist regime in Tehran for their human rights record, six people were hanged in Iran, 3 of them in public in grisly executions, that were later televised to further intimidate the population. One of those executed was a 20 year old man, accused of having committed the crime of homosexual rape when he was aged 13 years old!  In an interview with the BBC’s Persian service, Ms Beer even blamed sanctions by the West for not having helped to solve human rights issues and causing "civil society to bear more pressure". To blame the West for the executions, floggings, amputations, brutality and oppression that are now commonplace events in Iran, is risible and unworthy even of appeasers like Ms. Beer."
