“I want to use this opportunity to wish a very happy Iranian New Year – Nowrouz – to the people of Iran, especially to the youths and women who are standing up for freedom against dictatorship.”

“I was delighted to be able to listen to Iranian opposition leader Mrs. Maryam Rajavi when she was in the European Parliament recently. I believe her leadership as a woman is very important, especially as a Muslim woman who is fighting Islamic fundamentalism which has become a new global threat today in the world. She called for a secular government, equal rights for women and an end to the death penalty.”

“I want the people of Iran, especially the youth and women, that have the same rights as we have in Europe, to be able to decide their own future freely. We in the European Parliament as elected representatives of the people of Europe should set an example for our governments to defend European values which are human rights, women’s rights and democracy. This is what the people of Iran expect from us. We must support the democratic opposition.”

“So once again I wish you all a very happy new year, and I wish that freedom and democracy will come to Iran very soon,” Ms. Evi added.

Members of the European Parliament have sent their best wishes to the people of Iran on the occasion of Nowrouz, the Iranian New Year 1395, which coincides with the arrival of spring.
