Widespread lay-offs across Iran as inflation soars

Factories and companies are closing down across Iran leaving thousands without work amid a deepening economic crisis and soaring inflation, according to the latest reports from inside the regime.

Ninety road workers have died in the coldest provinces including Kohgiluyeh, Boyer Ahmad and Ardebil, West Azerbaijan, as they are forced to work in temperatures of -20C without proper equipment and facilities.

A worker in West Azerbaijan province died last week when his vehicle crashed, while contractors in Isfahan are working overtime and through their holidays without extra pay or workplace insurance.

In the city of Tabas, Khorasan Province, the boss of the Sazeh Blue Contract Company cancelled a contract before its deadline and expelled 100 without paying them four months’ salary that was due.

Around 1500 construction workers in the province of Kohgiluyeh and Boyer Ahmad have also been laid off before finishing their construction project, with new workers then been hired for the next project.

A labor activist in the city of Hamedan also reported that more than 250 workers have been made unemployed following the closure of Assad Abad Iron Melting Factory due to lack of money to purchase raw materials – the second time that this factory has closed down in the past two years.
A labor representative at the Orumiyeh Aftab Factory, that produces fruit juices and diary products, also reported that more than 54 workers were owed five months salary. The company is undergoing a cash crisis that has mean there are no available funds to purchase raw materials and production has ceased.
