The Italian parliamentary committee declared in a statement, “In our view, the international community and all democratic states must take a firm, clear, and serious stance against this brutal and medieval regime. We demand the immediate release of all political prisoners arrested under whatever pretext.”

The Italian parliamentary committee also voiced support for an international call by the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, on July 7, 2009. Mrs. Rajavi had urged all political parties, parliaments, jurists, and human rights and freedom of expression advocates, to support the Iranian people’s uprising for freedom, to take steps to help free those in confinement, and to declare solidarity with the families of martyrs and prisoners.

The Italian parliamentary committee also demanded the sending of an international delegation to investigate the situation of those disappeared as well as political prisoners, especially those arrested in recent weeks. It also demanded permission to visit all of the Iranian regime's prisons.

The committee said that it seeks more pressure exerted by the international community on the regime to force it to annul the illegitimate elections and accept free elections supervised by the United Nations.

The statement was signed by Carlo Ciccioli, Committee Chairman and Italian Member of Parliament, Elisabetta Zamparutti, Committee Co-Chair and Italian MP, and Antonio Stango, Committee Secretary and President of the human rights organization Helsinki Watch in Italy.
