Iran Protests – 17,19,20 October

October 20: Residents of Lordegan, in the province of Chaharmahal and Bakhtiari, have protested to the city’s mayor over plans to make a main street one-way for traffic, which they say will cause public transportation problems and reduce trade for local shops and businesses.

More than 40 shopkeepers also protested outside the governor’s office last week and signed a petition demanding the problem be solved.

October 20: More than 180 contract workers at the Fajr Petrochemical factory in Khomeini Port quit work in protest at not being given their overtime payments, the short-term nature unjust legal terms of their contracts. Their action means the harbor will be shut down until the workers’ demands are met.

October 20: Nurses at the Khomeini Hospital in Tehran gathered in the hospital grounds to protest at both the shortage of nurses and other staff and overtime work.
A labor official stated that since professional divisions had developed, extra nurses were now necessary.

October 19: A group of family members and relatives of several political prisoners, who were recently transferred to an unknown location from Gohardasht Prison in Karaj, protested to the Evin prosecutor at not being told where their loved ones are. The families claimed that the prison authorities had falsely told them that their loved ones had been transferred to different prisons.

October 19: Residents in Arak continued with their protests on Saturday in a town square to object to the polluted air. Their protest continued despite a heavy police presence, and the destruction of roads and pavements to create trenches and ditches to prevent the protest from taking place. Some held placards stating ‘Arak has the highest rate of cancer among the country’ and ‘The people of Arak need to breathe’. The protesters said they would continue with their action until their demands are met.

October 17: People in the city of Garmsar, Northern Province, gathered outside the water and sewage department to protest at an increase in water bills.
